EXO powers Jay-Z Merchandise at Yankee Stadium

CASE STUDY

One RFID Platform.
More Than Just Game Day.

How Yankee Stadium repurposed its existing EXO RFID checkout system to support three sold-out Jay-Z concerts.

When Jay-Z brought a three-night concert series to Yankee Stadium, the venue faced a familiar challenge with a completely different retail operation.

Approximately 45,000 fans attended each night’s performance, creating significant demand for concert merchandise. Rather than deploying a new checkout system for the event, the Yankees leveraged the EXO RFID checkout platform already in place for game-day retail — demonstrating how a single RFID investment can support multiple events, operators, and merchandise programs.

Working alongside Legends Hospitality, Roc Nation, RetailCloud, and multiple merchandise vendors, EXO helped transform the existing retail environment into a high-volume concert merchandise operation in just days.

The Challenge

The checkout infrastructure already existed. Everything else was new.

Unlike Yankees game-day retail, the concert introduced an entirely different merchandise assortment sourced from multiple vendors, each with varying levels of RFID readiness and product information. Product data needed to be collected, standardized, and loaded into the system while thousands of products required RFID tags before arriving at the stadium.

Operationally, the venue also needed to shift its checkout footprint, consolidating 25 existing RFID registers into the three merchandise locations expected to handle the highest concert traffic—all within a compressed event timeline.

The objective wasn’t to install new technology. It was to maximize the value of technology the venue already owned.

The Solution

Instead of replacing infrastructure, EXO reconfigured it.

The existing RFID checkout environment was adapted specifically for the Jay-Z merchandise program while continuing to use the venue’s established RetailCloud POS system and cashier-assisted workflow.

EXO worked across the entire merchandise ecosystem to prepare the event, including:

  • Standardizing the complete multi-vendor product catalog
  • Creating UPCs and supporting product data where required
  • Printing and distributing ~120,000 RFID tags
  • Coordinating warehouse tagging for ~26,500 products that were not factory tagged
  • Consolidating 25 RFID checkout stations into the stadium’s three highest-volume merchandise locations
  • Configuring the checkout environment, loading products, testing the deployment, and providing onsite support throughout the event
  • Training temporary event staff to confidently operate the RFID checkout stations

At checkout, cashiers simply placed merchandise into the RFID read zone, allowing every item in the purchase to be identified instantly before completing payment through the venue’s existing POS system.

Results

The Jay-Z concert series demonstrated that RFID is more than a faster checkout solution, it’s a flexible retail platform.

By repurposing infrastructure already installed throughout Yankee Stadium, the venue successfully supported three consecutive sold-out concerts without investing in a separate checkout environment. The same EXO platform used during Yankees games was quickly adapted for an entirely new merchandise operation, extending the value of the venue’s RFID investment well beyond baseball.

Conclusion

A Smarter Return on RFID

Major venues don’t host just one type of event.

They host professional sports, concerts, festivals, college games, international matches, and special events throughout the year. Each brings different merchandise, different vendors, and different operational requirements.

That’s where EXO delivers long-term value.

Instead of deploying new checkout technology for every event, venues can adapt the same RFID platform to support new merchandise programs and changing retail operations—maximizing the return on an investment that’s already in place.

Because EXO isn’t just built for opening day. It’s built for everything that comes after.
