CASE STUDY
Super Bowl LVIII demanded a retail solution that could keep up with the world’s biggest sporting event. With tens of thousands of fans flooding the NFL Shop, Legends needed a fast, reliable, and scalable system to process high-volume transactions without slowing down the fan experience.
Over four days of intense retail activity, Legends faced a familiar challenge: serve more customers in less time—without compromising visibility, control, or service. Traditional POS systems were too slow and labor-intensive to handle the peak demand. To avoid long lines and missed sales, a modern approach to checkout was essential.
For the first time at a Super Bowl, RFID-based self-checkout was available at scale. EXO Checkout was deployed across 20 of the 40 available registers, allowing fans to instantly scan all their merchandise without the need for individual barcode scans. Designed for high-throughput environments, EXO Checkout reduced average transaction times to just 47 seconds.
EXO provided real-time RFID tagging capabilities on-site. This ensured that all merchandise, including last-minute inventory or custom products, was tagged correctly and immediately available for sale through the RFID-enabled system. This flexible, just-in-time approach to labeling supported operational speed and accuracy without delaying product availability.
EXO’s deployment included its integrated Loss Detection & Notification system. Using item-level RFID tracking, EXO monitored merchandise at the store exits and identified items that had not been purchased. If an item passed through a designated zone without a valid transaction, a smart display board alerted staff, allowing immediate and discreet intervention. This approach delivered visibility into potential shrink without relying on traditional EAS gates or manual checks.
“Thanks to EXO for collaborating to implement the first RFID all-in-one self checkout / security / inventory system at Super Bowl LVIII.
47 second checkout times, not too bad!”

The success of EXO at Super Bowl LVIII demonstrated the impact RFID can have on high-volume retail operations—reducing friction at the point of sale, increasing transaction speed, and delivering measurable results. With over 10,000 transactions completed and a 24% lift in sales, EXO helped Legends set a new benchmark for efficiency and fan satisfaction.
The outcome was so successful that EXO was selected again for Super Bowl LIX, where the system delivered even faster results—bringing the average self-checkout transaction time down to just 39.3 seconds.
EXO continues to support the world’s premier venues and events with RFID technology that enhances performance, visibility, and the overall customer experience.
