CASE STUDY
Twice Threaded is a curated buy, sell and trade resale boutique located in Belmont Shore, Long Beach, California. The store specializes in secondhand men’s and women’s clothing, footwear and accessories, with new merchandise added daily.
Unlike a traditional apparel retailer, Twice Threaded manages a constantly changing assortment of unique products. Merchandise moves through a six-week lifecycle with scheduled markdowns before the collection is refreshed, creating a retail environment that depends on accurate pricing, reliable inventory information and efficient in-store operations.
Twice Threaded selected EXO to modernize checkout while supporting the complex workflows behind its resale business.
EXO partnered with Twice Threaded to design and deploy a complete RFID retail solution tailored to the store’s workflows.
The deployment included two RFID-powered self-checkout stations, RFID inventory management, RFID loss detection at the store exits, merchandise-tagging support, payment integration and staff training. At the center of the project was a custom integration connecting EXO with Shopify.
Rather than duplicating pricing rules within a separate checkout system, EXO uses Shopify’s native tax and discount calculations to deliver consistent, location-aware totals. This allows Twice Threaded to maintain the pricing logic already established within Shopify while extending the retail experience through RFID-powered checkout.
The integration also connects Shopify and EXO so that orders, payments and fulfillment remain aligned across online and in-store sales channels.
By automating the flow of transaction data between systems, the solution reduces manual processing, helps prevent avoidable errors and keeps checkout moving.
At checkout, cashiers simply placed merchandise into the RFID read zone, allowing every item in the purchase to be identified instantly before completing payment through the venue’s existing POS system.
The deployment provides:
The project demonstrates how EXO can integrate with an existing retail technology stack while adapting RFID to specialized workflows that extend beyond traditional apparel retail.
Twice Threaded’s deployment demonstrates the broader value of RFID beyond faster checkout.
Customers simply place their RFID-tagged merchandise in the EXO station, where multiple items are identified instantly—eliminating the need to scan individual barcodes. Behind the scenes, transactions are processed using Shopify’s existing pricing, tax and discount logic, preserving the retailer’s established business workflows.
The same RFID tags used at checkout also provide item-level inventory visibility and automated loss detection, creating a single RFID platform for checkout, inventory management and loss prevention.
Rather than deploying separate technologies to solve each challenge, Twice Threaded now manages these core retail functions through one connected system—simplifying operations, reducing manual effort and giving store associates more time to focus on serving customers.
